Description: During India’s opening World Cup game MS Dhoni wore gloves that had a dagger logo embossed which looked like an Army insignia.
Dhoni is an honorary Lieutenant Colonel in the Parachute Regiment of the Territorial Army and dagger is part of their emblem. This has sparked a lot of controversies. Despite BCCI’s assertion to ICC that it was not a military symbol, Dhoni was denied the permission to wear the dagger insignia on his wicket-keeping gloves during the World Cup.
“The ICC has responded to the BCCI to confirm the logo displayed by MS Dhoni in the previous match is not permitted to be worn on his wicket-keeping gloves at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019”, an ICC statement said.
“The regulations for ICC events do not permit any individual message or logo to be displayed on any items of clothing or equipment. In addition to this, the logo also breaches the regulations in relation to what is permitted on wicket-keeper gloves”.
As per the rule book, only the sponsor’s logo is allowed on the wicket-keeping gloves.
MS Dhoni’s wicket keeping gloves already sport an SG logo.
Even as the controversy over the ‘Indian army insignia’ on the glove refused to die, MS Dhoni found support from Indians who backed his decision on Twitter. Many tweeted about how proud they were of both Dhoni and the Indian Army. Also, Union Minister Smriti Irani posted a picture of the Para Commandos Special Forces symbol on Instagram to express her solidarity with the cricketer. Her post read “You’ll never see us cause we don’t exist. You’ll never hear about us cause it never happened.
We don’t exist so that you can. Men apart, every man an emperor”.
