The deadline for PAN-Aadhaar linking has been extended eight times. The previous deadline was December 31, 2019
The Income Tax department says your PAN will become inoperative if you don’t link it with Aadhaar by March 31, 2020, according to a PTI report.
The deadline for PAN-Aadhaar linking has been extended eight times. The previous deadline was December 31, 2019.
WHAT EXACTLY HAS THE I-T DEPARTMENT SAID?
According to the report, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has inserted a rule to stipulate the “manner of making permanent account number inoperative”. The CBDT says:
If your PAN becomes inoperative, you’ll be liable for all consequences under the I-T Act for not furnishing, intimating or quoting it.
WHAT IF I LINK PAN AND AADHAAR AFTER MARCH 31?
If you link PAN and Aadhaar after March 31, your PAN will “become operative from the date of intimation of Aadhaar number”.
According to Section 139 AA (2) of the Income Tax Act, every person with a PAN — from July 1, 2017 onwards — and is eligible to obtain Aadhaar must intimate his or her Aadhaar number to tax authorities.
