Google has announced a new layout for Gmail. The new layout which will be available to start trying in February changes how Google Meet, Google Chat, and Spaces are integrated into Gmail. The layout is expected to become the default option by the end of Q2 2022.
The changes ensure that Google’s other messaging tools, including its business-focused Workspace suite, are not just little windows floating alongside your emails anymore, but get their own screens in Gmail that are accessible with large buttons on the left-hand side.
This new Gmail layout has been termed as the integrated view. Starting February 8, you will be able to start testing the new layout for yourself according to the Mountain View headquartered tech giant.Image source: Google
Google says that there will be a prompt at some point, encouraging users to switch to the new layout. Any Gmail user who has not opted in for the new layout by April will be switched over to the new layout but will be able to switch back in settings. That option to revert back to the old settings will go away by the end of the second quarter, according to Google, when the new layout becomes the “standard experience for Gmail.”ADVERTISEMENT
Even though the new layout appears to be more convenient and accessible, it remains to be seen how the changes will be perceived by users who have been familiar with the old layout for years.
The new interface looks like it will give you easy access to other tools without having them always on the screen, based on what Google’s shown off so far.
Google describing its new layout said, “easily switch between your inbox, important conversations, and join meetings without having to switch between tabs or open a new window.”
Google says the integrated view will be available to users with a Google Workspace Business Starter, Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Essentials, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Education Fundamentals, Education Plus, Frontline, Nonprofit, G Suite Basic, or Business account. At the moment, it will not be available to Workspace Essentials customers.
